BismimgThe mosques of Allah shall be visited and maintained by such as believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, and fear none (at all) except Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. – Translation: Yusuf Ali, Quran 9:18
Why is it that Muslims chase after money for Musjids, when they end up becoming neglected, unvisited, essentially abandoned?
Few things upset me more than attending a gathering which turns into a fundraising session, where the speaker is throwing out vast sums of money as minimum donations. Screaming for funds for a musjid from people who will not ever visit it, much less regularly. Fundraising dinners, something far from the noble Sunnat, are even worse. From my understanding, Musjids are not built for the sake of building them. Rather, as the above ayat shows, they need to be maintained by those who visit it. Meaning what?
Meaning that, as the people need things, they will come together and put the elbow grease and money to make it happen.
Those who use the services of the Musjid need to be reminded of the above verse, if they are visiting it, they need to maintain it. If they are paying to maintain or grow it, it better be because they are visiting it. Those abusing services of the Musjid without any support, well, they should really be the first to be praying outside when its full! Usually by kindness of the workers that doesn’t happen, but then, at a minimum they should be ashamed of themselves.
Far too many plans for building and or expanding a Musjid have fallen to the wayside by people who are expanding it for the sake of expansion, making it beautiful far beyond their means.
Empire building of the middle-class mosque management age.

Musjid? Is that pronunciation common? Never heard/seen it before.
as-salamu’alaikum,
Pretty common… Pronounced: Muss-jids
He meant the transliteration, I think. Masjid is more common, and IMHO, rightfully so as “u” is commonly used to denote a damma.
as-salamu’alaikum,
Both are interchangeable IMHO.. reminds be of the discussion of Shaykh and Sheikh. Around me, those unaware have a way of taking Masjid and pronouncing is Mass-jid, which I feel is an incorrect pronounciation. That may be the NJ accent coming through.
