salaamu ‘alykum,
mashaAllah, simply sublime!
sidi yursil,
if you dont mind me asking, could you render some information about your recording device? i recently bought a digital recorder myself (olympus WS-310M) and still trying to figure out how to get a good recording out of it. also, do you use an external mic or the built-in?
walaikumassalam sidi touhid,
Sure, this recording was made with the Edirol R-1:
http://www.roland.com/products/en/R-1/specs.html
The internal mic’s for the R-1 are much better than “Voice Recorders” as well as the fact that it uses pretty high end components internally to keep the ‘buzz’, ‘whoosh’, and other extra noises out of the recording. It was made for music recording, which is what makes it different than general voice recorder’s.
It can record in 24bit wav although that is really extreme quality.
I also use the Rode NT4 as an external mic. For this recording I used the external mic.
http://www.rode.com.au/?pagename=Products&product=NT4
It cost me about $300 for the R-1 off of Ebay and similarly for the mic.
This setup results in professional quality recording in my opinion, but it is a bit of a hassle to keep it all together. And when you mess up, you really mess up. One of my main mawlid recordings was totally messed up because I had wrapped the extra wire from the mic around my recorder, and it had pulled just ever-so-slightly on the mic connection. Now it is an unusuable file.
The problem is recording dhikr is a bit of a on-the-spot thing, and I don’t want to intrude on Shaykh just while is doing a sohobet. So I have a brief few seconds in between Sohobet and Dhikr starting to get my equipment in place.
The recorder is generally placed in the middle of the circle of mureeds and shaykh is part of that circle, the recorder (or the mic) is aimed at him so his voice is more pronounced.
Oh and I do some post-processing in Sony Sound Forge (software)!
As-Salaam wa Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Baarakatahu,
Olympus WS-310M? I think that’s the Same one I have!…..mash’ALLAH! I get Pretty good recordings on it(I recorded the entire Sohbet and Dhikr of Mawlid at the farm as well), but obviously not as good as Sidi Yursil’s. Gets the job done though.
PS.-Having Sidi Yursil’s Super-MIKE dosn’t hurt.
-Was-Salaam wa Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatahu
salaamu ‘alykum sidi yursil
Hope you are well. Great blog, and content.
I just have two questions. Are you going to resume with the commentary on the Contentions of Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad?
And secondly, do you record the sohbets with Shaykh Abdul Kerim al-Kibrisi straight to *.mp3 or to *.wav?.
Thanks in advance
Abdul Rehman
walaikum as-salaam,
Jazakallahkhair, I hope this service is of some benefit.
1) Yes, inshahallah next week
2) I do record them, but I haven’t put them online yet. I wanted to get one collection of dhikr going first. I think I am at the point where I can start to post a sohobet.
Salaam Ya Sidi!
What I meant to ask in question 2 was, do you convert the wav files to mp3 on your pc *or* do you record the dhikr/sohbets as mp3 files on your recorder?
I have an iriver H320 and record straight to mp3 with it, but the quality of your recorder is out of this world, (aswell as the dhikr/sohbet/lessons)!
Keep up the good work!
Abdul Rehman
Wassalaam my dear Abdul Rehman
Sorry, I was replying a bit late.. losing reading comprehension
I usually keep it in mp3, both dhikr and sohobet. I have a 512MB card which means I get to record a few hours without having to move files to PC.
I rarely record in WAV, but inshahallah I will try that once.
Thanks!
salaam
