ho-hum

September 19, 2005  |  Thoughts

I’ve been spending much of last week trying desperately to make contact with other Muslims in my area.. not much luck unfortunately.

I was also keen on learning about some of Sheykh Nuh’s mureeds the NYC area, but after contacting the website (suhba.org) I did not have much luck. Then I attempted to see if could learn more about the tariqa from tariqanotes.com.. to get access to the books offered you need to register to even shop for a book. The registration seems to involve a manual approval process which required a reference from a mureed. No one got back to me yet, but then again, I didn’t have a mureed reference. humorous.

Also tried contacting some other Muslim friends I haven’t heard from in a while (since the baby/ wife’s pregnancy) and didn’t hear back from them either.

I might need to take a recorded Sunnipath class as a prerequisite instead of the Live class I registered for and thought I was accepted to. I suppose I will find out the details shortly. Even if it is possible, I don’t think I would take the two at the same time for a number of reasons, number one is that will be probably be too much overlap for my comfort.

  1. :) The [Quduri] class presupposes that one covered the details of Hanafi fiqh systematically. The Essentials of Worship courses (part one and two) do just that; and the Quduri course builds on that understanding. This is why one must either have covered the Essentials of Worship courses (or their equivalent elsewhere), or do part one of that with Quduri….

  2. as-salamu’alaikum Shaykh Faraz,

I think the 31 recorded sessions of Essentials of Worship part 1 will be too much for me to combine with 2 hour length live sessions on the same subject.

I listened to the preview of Lesson 10 of the Essentials of Worship. A few points were interesting to me, but it seemed overall a basic how-to-perform-salat.

It is difficult for me to know if I have completed its equivilant elsewhere since I am not sure what could be covered in the class. 31 Lessons on the topic of prayer and purification alone must contain a lot I am not aware of.

Though, personally, I was much more interested in:

“Students will gain an understanding of the legal reasoning and methodology underlying legal details, and they will strengthen their understanding of the details and nuances of fiqh. In addition, students will develop an understanding of the style and usage of classical works in Hanafi fiqh, in order to be able to refer to them and conduct their research soundly”

At least, I find it much more thought provoking than re-reading the hanafi position on wudu over khuf, when ghusl is required, etc

Anyway, I don’t think I can do them at the same time, and I don’t want to be caught off-guard in the Quduri class. If it is a prerequisite then I suppose I will drop the Ihya (9 lessons) and the Quduri class (weekly live) and take Essentials (31 lessons).

  3. You think that “Masjid” at the gas station in Roxbury is still around? :) Maybe that’d be a good place to start tracking down other Muslims in the area.

  4. lol i forgot about that musjid… anyway I live far from there now :)

  5. Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I think it would be enough to take part one of the [Essentials of Worship] course with [Quduri], insha’Allah…

(Tell the Academy staff I mentioned that… it may help you… though if my wife responds… :) )

  6. wa’laikum-salaam,

Jazakallah, I will do. “See” you this weekend.
