28. British religious painting: why this indifference to the Passion?

I have no experience with British religious paintings, although the similarity of this contention to the criticism present in Contention #22 is interesting.

My impression (only gathered from this one line) is that British religious paintings must be rather dry.

  1. Salaam alaikum,
The British are not known for passionate works of the subject of the Passion. In earlier works, there is reverance for the subject but the colors are muted and bland. Not like the Italians with their vibrant colors and stong dark/light contrast. But after the Enlightenment, the Passion painting loses all meaning. By the 20th century, artists like Salvador Dali mock the Passion as a psychological construct.
