3. This sin of the Muslim world: menefregismo

After a bit of searching I found that the word menefregismo is an Italian term (slang?) that refers to an “every man for himself / who cares about anyone else” approach to life.

I would agree with the Sheykh’s assertion. It is a major problem of this community. You can witness this in the very small things of everyday life for a Muslim; from the strange Muslim parking practices during Eid prayers to the rush towards the food upon opening our fast.

On the larger scale, we will grumble and moan over our the problems in Iraq or our dictator leaders or even our local politics in the musjid, but as long as we get our paycheck over here, who actually gets involved in changing the system?

  1. That’s an interesting interpretation.

What about the Muslim’s thinking that because we will stand alone on the Day of Judgement and will only account for our own actions, what everyone else is doing does not matter. I think that applies to this contention – but what do you think Abdal Hakim Murad meant in reference to this?

  2. I agree with Yursil with regards to Shaykh’s assertion in terms of “The state of Muslim world”,

The example sited by Yursil does indicate something; it may account for lack of etiquette’s, mutual respect, or basic decency. But that relates to one’s own environment, may I dare to say upbringing, cultural moldings so on and so forth…but this can still be corrected…

The worrisome part is the spiritual light, that enlightens our life, the awakening that has to come from learning, reasoning of our faith , that takes away the blinders has not reached our hearts as yet.

Maera, Your interpretation, I am sorry to say is completely off the mark.

Day of Judgment accountability, accounts for all your good and bad actions, driven by your intentions. It cannot serve the justification for inaction; it rights all the wrongs that Yursil sited.

Here’s my desertation, please bear with me….

There was a city where its sins, had surpassed Gods mercy. God ordered the angels to shower brimstone and destroy the city, the angels returned and stated that, Oh! Lord in that city is a very pious man who worships you day and night, what should we do!

God commanded that, start the destruction beginning with the pious man, what did he do when there was so much wrong around him?? Did he take any actions to stop the wrong around him!!

Once a man approached Prophet (PBUH) with a question as to how he should keep relations with his brother. The Prophet informed him to support his brother if he is wronged, or when he is wrong.

The man replied that, ” I can understand that I should help my brother when he is wronged, but how should I support my brother when he is doing wrong?”. The Prophet replied that “You help him by preventing him from doing wrong”.

  3. menefregismo is an Italian term with latin roots.
