Continuation of my Contentions Series
10. The East is content without form; the West is form without content.
Interpretation:
The Sheykh gives us a break from big words and complicated references with this one.
The East is a disaster. The Muslim world is in pieces, impotent, reckless, and disorganized.
The West is a disaster, only differently. Suffering from the problems associated with having a man-made law, the most disgusting of human acts are being legalized and supported by the state. However, there is organization and methodology in the madness (i.e. the West spends a great deal of effort to argue over the legality of Gay marriages).
Spiritually bereft, but practical to the last, the West seeks spiritual meaning from Eastern religions of Islam through Sufism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism. Hence, the West is form without content.
Muslims, while having a deep spiritual base, are lacking in implementation of those ideals in any practical manner. Hence the East is content, without form.

You treat the two halves as though they are characterizations of unrelated parts, whereas the whole sentence suggests a dialectical conception. They are bound together by their antitheses. Their deficiencies can be made up from each other’s resources.
Lord of the East and the West, right?
That is an excellent point.
